Linking productivity and competitiveness, with resource efficiency (e.g. of feed, fertiliser, energy, water), is essential to minimise environmental impact and promote long term sustainability in dairy farming.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from UK dairy farms have declined sharply over the last 20 years and today represent less than 2% of the UK's total emissions. However, the industry is still required to play its part in making further progress. DairyCo conducts research on carbon foot printing to provide a benchmark for GB milk production, and to identify routes which the industry can use to achieve further reductions in GHG emissions.

Water is an increasingly scarce resource. Recent research has investigated a framework for water foot printing GB milk production systems, to provide a basis for international comparison and to identify opportunities for reductions in water use.
