Factors affecting the utilisation of genetic information by GB dairy farmers

Published 31 October 14

Aims & Objectives
It is contended that not enough farmers place sufficient emphasis on £PLI when selecting bulls (and which cows to breed from), leading to a lower rate of genetic improvement than would be expected if £PLI was more widely used as a decisive factor in selection. This could potentially impact GB dairy competitiveness. Which raises the question:

Why aren't more GB farmers using the more profitable genetics?

Expected Outcomes

  • Provide an understanding of the factors important in farmers’ decision making processes when selecting bulls and dams
  • Identify themes which should be focussed on, as well as those which should be avoided, when promoting £PLI in the future.
