China tightens infant formula regulations

Published 14 September 15

A revision of China’s food safety law, expected to come into effect on 1 October, will place tighter restrictions on domestic manufacturers of infant formula by preventing businesses from using one formulation to produce multiple products.

Industry commentators have suggested this latest development will result in smaller manufacturers exiting the industry and will thus alleviate food safety concerns associated with some domestic manufacturers and brands. Others have suggested that, in the future, these restrictions may apply to manufacturers of imported infant formula too.
