Industrial cheese and butter usage grows

Published 25 November 15

Industrial use of cheese and butter (in sandwiches, pizzas, etc.) grew faster than retail sales or food-service usage for EU-28 in 2014, according to DG Agri. More than a third of the cheese and butter consumed was through these manufactured products and this share is expected to rise over the coming years.

Cheese usage in industry is rising because of its popularity with consumers in terms of taste and in some cases as a substitute for meat. Consumer trends away from “artificial” foods, combined with compulsory labelling for refined fat ingredients (eg palm oil), is leading some manufacturers to use butter instead of vegetable oils.

As a result, increased industrial use is expected to help drive up domestic consumption of cheese and butter in the EU over the next decade.
