Grass growth picks up for May

Published 1 June 16

Pasture growth has improved significantly during May after a slow start to the year, according to measurements from AHDB Dairy’s monitor farms around GB.

Throughout March and April, below average temperatures restricted grass growth, hampering spring turnout. Some farms would have also delayed turnout due to the risk of damage to sodden pasture, following months of heavy rainfall.

This slow grass growth followed by a sudden surge has had an impact on GB daily milk deliveries. Farms will now need to manage rapidly growing pastures carefully in order to avoid a drop-off in grass quality. For more information, visit our Forage for Knowledge pages
