Origin labelling for dairy products unlikely to be compulsory

It looks unlikely that processed dairy products in the EU will need to include information on where the milk was sourced. According to Eucolait, the draft report on mandatory origin labelling has been leaked. The report found that while the costs of labelling would probably be modest, many dairy processors source raw milk and other dairy ingredients from multiple sources, which would create difficulties in monitoring and labelling. It was suggested that the voluntary approach still allowed businesses to add origin labels to satisfy consumers’ requests for this information, but did not add unnecessary costs to businesses which would not benefit from the practice.

The draft report is scheduled to be discussed at the next meeting of the Farm Council on 16 June.
