Record slaughter numbers in New Zealand

Cow slaughter in New Zealand appears to have accelerated in recent months, making it increasingly likely that the season’s total could reach a new high.

Between October and 9 May 750,000 cows had been slaughtered, up 24%, compared to the same period last year. Data on slaughterings is not broken down by origin (i.e. beef or dairy) so it is unclear how much of this increase is attributable to dairy herd culling. However, according to AgriHq, it is safe to assume that most of the extra cows processed this year are from dairy herds, which is likely due to poor performance of dairy markets.
