Livestock Event round-up

IMG_0076Livestock 2015 is now behind us and the general consensus, among colleagues, is that the joint AHDB Dairy and AHDB Beef & Lamb stand worked and the new sector branding was well received.

The event presents a useful opportunity to meet with levy payers and discuss the work in-hand to help them progress and counter the challenges many face.

Research and development is a cornerstone of AHDB. The research booklets, produced by AHDB Dairy, were popular among those looking to understand the range of topics which is currently funded.

There were a number of highlights for AHDB Dairy, including the announcement of this year’s RABDF Gold Cup winner. Congratulations to Neil Baker from Somerset, for winning this prestigious award. The finalists too must get a mention as, according to the judges, Neil faced strong competition for the top slot.

This year’s Gold Cup finalists were:

  • Messrs. Harvey, Drum Farm, Beeswing, Dumfries
  • Brian Yates, East Logan, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire
  • Fergus McDowall, Rerrick Farm, Dundrennan, Kirkcudbright
  • Arthur Palmer, Oulton House Farm Ltd, Norbury, Staffordshire
  • Philip Metcalfe, Washfold Farm, Leyburn, North Yorkshire

The Healthy Feet Area of the show included presentations on how to tackle lameness and techniques in lameness prevention delivered by mobility mentors and AHDB-funded researchers. Some sessions ironically saw ‘standing room only’ the attendance was so great!

In the Feed Science forum Dr Stephen Whelan, AHDB Dairy R&D Manager, spoke about protein levels in dairy diets and the impact or otherwise of reducing the overall level in a healthy diet.

AHDB Dairy Extension Officers played a key part in the official launch of the Women in Dairy initiative which we are pleased to support, in association with Promar and RABDF.
