Hard discounters drive improved cheese sales

Hard discounters continued to improve their market share, in terms of cheese volume sales. At the end of 2017, they accounted for around 19% of the market. The Top 4 retailers saw a 2% reduction in volume sales, with their majority falling to 64.5%. Other retailers too saw a reduction in cheese sales.

Overall, the value of GB retail cheese sales increased in 2017 compared to 2016, as both volumes and average prices rose.

In percentage terms, processed and other types of cheese saw volumes fall by around 1% while low fat varieties fell nearly 5%. All other types increased, with cheddar up 1.4% - again due to improved volumes and average price.
