New Zealand milk production

Published 25 April 19

March milk production in New Zealand was down 8.3% (7.5% on a milksolids basis)

Due to favourable weather conditions, production in the season to date was up 3.1%, and up 3.2% for the 12 months to March.

However, since the beginning of 2019 dry conditions and a heatwave have led to below average milk production in February and the lowest milk production for March since 2013. The heatwave and dry weather has likely encouraged dairy producers to dry their cows off earlier than anticipated as they come towards the end of their milk production season.
