Higher retail milk prices help to offset flat sales

The value of the retail market for fresh milk rose in the year to 26 March 2017 despite little change in the volume of milk sold. This was due to a 1.7% increase in the average retail price of a litre of milk compared to the same period in 2016.

Retail prices had been declining for the past 3 years but this trend changed at the beginning of 2017 for pasteurised milk. Prices for all other milk categories continue to fall year on year, but given the predominance of pasteurised milk in the market, it has pulled up the overall average.
